Monteverde means Green Mountain in Spanish, and rightly so, as it's a small, lush, misty, and cloudy town located in the Northern Region on the edge of the Tilarán Mountain Range, 110 miles from San José. The trip is well worth it, as it's considered a top ecotourism destination. Newsweek recently named it one of the 100 places to remember before they disappear, ranking it number 14 in the Americas. National Geographic has called it "the crown jewel of cloud forest reserves." It's no wonder that tourists and naturalists flock to this region to experience the captivating natural beauty and unparalleled biodiversity that Monteverde offers.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve was created in 1972 and is a 10,500-hectare area, comprised of 90% intact virgin forest, making it one of the region's most prized tourist destinations.
Monteverde's variable climate and high altitude have fostered an exceptionally high level of biodiversity. It is home to 2,500 plant species, including an unprecedented 34 of the world's 500 species—the highest concentration of any single area.
The region boasts 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, 120 reptile and amphibian species, and thousands of insect species.
