Doka, Greece and Sarchí (Cart Factory)

This tour begins with a wonderful journey through some of the largest coffee plantations in the country, known as Hacienda Doka, located at about 1350 meters (4500 feet) above sea level, where we will tour the place observing the process and machinery used to produce our golden bean.
Description:

We will learn about the tradition, history, and culture of one of the best coffees in the world. After the explanation, a delicious and typical Costa Rican lunch awaits us.

Afterward, we will head to Grecia, a quiet and beautiful town dedicated to coffee and sugarcane farming, as well as textiles. Founded in 1838, it is considered one of the cleanest towns in Latin America. There, you can admire the famous metal church, unique in the country, which has a strange but beautiful Neo-Gothic architecture brought from Europe to Costa Rica in the last decade of the 19th century.

Next, we’ll head to the town of Sarchí, considered the cradle of Costa Rican handicrafts. There, we’ll visit a cart factory to observe local artisans at work, creating their finest paintings and wood carvings, especially the traditional, exquisitely decorated carts in various sizes. These carts are admired worldwide for their unparalleled beauty and design.

In Sarchí, we’ll visit the central park to see the world’s largest oxcart, which proudly holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. This oxcart was used to transport coffee, sugarcane, and timber—in short, it was the primary means of transportation in Costa Rica during the 19th and part of the 20th centuries—and is considered a national symbol.

It’s worth noting that during this part of the tour, we’ll have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs and other fine handicrafts, the kind only the artisans of Sarchí know how to create.
