This tour combines the Irazú Volcano, Orosi Valley, and Lankester Botanical Gardens.
We’ll take the Pan-American Highway South and begin the ascent to the majestic Irazú. The winding road will lead us through fertile lands cultivated with all kinds of vegetables and produce, such as potatoes, onions, and garlic, among others. At the summit of the volcano, you’ll be able to see the main craters known as Irazú, Playa Hermosa, and Diego de la Haya.
This colossus is the tallest volcano in the country, standing at 3,432 meters (11,000 feet) above sea level. Its last eruptive phase occurred between 1963 and 1965, with strong emissions of gas and ash that were felt throughout the country. On a clear, sunny day, both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can be seen.
After visiting the volcano, we will descend to the city of Cartago, the former capital of Costa Rica, established in 1563 by the conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado. There, we will stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a pilgrimage site for many faithful, a tradition dating back to 1635.
The next stop is the Lankester Botanical Garden, a research center of the University of Costa Rica, created for the protection and preservation of more than 800 species of orchids, as well as other plant species. A guided tour will take us through the different sections, including those dedicated to bromeliads, cacti, heliconias, palms, and more.
Next, we’ll continue to the marvelous and scenic Orosí Valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains and diverse crops such as coffee and sugarcane, among others. This valley was an important settlement during the colonial era, witnessing various historical events including pirate attacks, earthquakes, and floods, as well as the significant role of the Franciscan friars, who were entrusted with the evangelization process and pioneers in building the first Catholic churches in the country.
On this tour, we’ll visit one of the few colonial churches that still stand, followed by a delicious traditional lunch at the best restaurant in the area.
