The impressive Arenal Volcano is a natural wonder located in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Alajuela, offering thousands of tourists the opportunity to appreciate the columns of white smoke, ash, and fumarolic activity emanating from the conical colossus. It’s important to note that the volcano had remained dormant for at least 450 years until July 29, 1968, when it experienced a major eruption, beginning a new period of pyroclastic activity that has been decreasing in recent years.
On the way to Arenal Volcano, we will stop in the famous town of Sarchí, known as the cradle of Costa Rican artisans, where you will have the best opportunity to purchase souvenirs such as wood carvings, clothing, and other mementos.
In Sarchí, you’re likely to see an oxcart that holds the title of the world’s largest. It’s constructed of cedar wood and decorated with striking colors, such as a bright orange. The design is typical and intricate, featuring two levels and taking 70 days to complete. It also holds an honorable mention in the Guinness World Records.
The journey continues, passing through forested areas and plantations of various agricultural products, including coffee, pineapple, and ornamental plants, as well as cattle ranches, until reaching the charming town of La Fortuna. There, you’ll stop for lunch at a cozy restaurant with a spectacular view of Arenal Volcano.
After lunch, you’ll visit a viewpoint closer to the base of the volcano, where you can also appreciate the view of Lake Arenal.
Eventually, the tourist will enjoy and relax in one of the best hot springs in the area, where they can experience its rejuvenating effects, as well as a massage (optional activity) or other special treatments that must be booked in advance.
The Baldi facilities offer tourists 25 thermal pools, naturally fed by the volcano. The medicinal waters are certified by the LNA (National Water Laboratory), and the temperature ranges from 33 to 66 degrees Celsius (93-152 degrees Fahrenheit), providing guests with a wide range of options to suit their preferences.
And for a perfect ending, before returning to San José, a delicious dinner is served with a great view of the volcano, ensuring you don’t miss any opportunity to appreciate it once again.
