During our trip, we will observe various typical crops of the region, such as potatoes, onions, garlic, and beets, as well as cattle ranches, all while enjoying the incomparable view of the Central Valley. As we approach, we will notice the diversity of microclimates and the differences in vegetation. Upon reaching the summit, we will be able to observe the main craters: Irazú, Playa Hermosa, and Diego de la Haya. It is worth noting that on a sunny and clear day, both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can be seen in the distance.
This majestic volcano is the highest in our country, with an altitude of 3,432 meters (11,000 feet) above sea level. During the period from 1963 to 1965, it experienced gas and ash eruptions that reached and affected the entire national territory, remaining the most remembered eruptive event to this day. At the summit, we will discover a fascinating, unique vegetation known as páramo forest.
After an exciting tour of the volcano, we will descend to the historic city of Cartago, founded in 1563 by the conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado. Cartago served as the capital of Costa Rica during the colonial era until 1823, and we will visit the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, the patron saint of Costa Ricans.
